Case Studies

Real events that show how I combatted problems and faced challenges in the workplace and group projects.

#1 Difficult Client

Problem

While working with an in-home health care company, I was asked to work with an older man who the agency was having a difficult time placing a permanent worker with because our other employees found it tough to work with him and get this client to achieve the daily goals independently. He had wanted workers to come and do these things for him and didn't understand why the company was always bugging him and making him do things.

This was a particularly challenging job because the client was confined to a wheelchair. Another point was the man and I come from the same cultural background where we are taught that we should always serve our elders. I knew it would be uncomfortable trying to tell him that he has to attempt the given tasks independently. Although I knew I would for sure run into obstacles, I took on the challenge with a determined attitude.

Solution

I decided that instead of going into my shifts with the intent of completing his daily goals, my main focus was going to be getting this man to trust me. We took the first 30 minutes of each shift just to talk and get to know each other. I wanted to find a common ground and something we could connect over. After a few shifts, we were able to get to a place where he felt comfortable telling me his future goal of wanting to move to Utah. I saw this as an opportunity to use this goal as a motivator as he was wanting to live on his own in the future. His friends and family had great concern about his plans.

Results

After I discovered a motivator for him, I would start saying things like "If we just check off, then we can snap a picture and show your mom", or "Let's get done. That way we can find a good way for you to move around and you'll be able to do it with ease once you live on your own." This got my client to happily engage in the activities and even capture some funny moments. Taking on this strategy helped him to enjoy the work, all while he completed the company tasks and made progress towards his own personal goals.

#2 Introducing A New On Campus Resource (WSR)

Problem

Women's Services & Resources is an on-campus resource at BYUH that help to combat the issues women face here at our university. With the female attendance rate sitting at 68%, BYUH felt that women needed more representation here and make sure we are providing adequate resources to assist them with their needs. WSR was brought to campus for this particular reason, but needed help spreading awareness of their presence on campus. Because they are a recent addition, they needed a marketing strategy to resolve this problem.

Solution

To find an appropriate way to market this new department to women, I chose a target market of women (single, 18-22 years of age, new on campus) and interviewed as many of these women on campus that I could find to ask them these three questions:

- Do you feel satisfied with the support the school has offered for your health, both physical and mental?

- If there was a place on campus dedicated to supporting women's problems, what issue would you want them to focus on the most?

- What way are you most likely to hear about new resources on campus?

Results

With these questions, I was able to find a way to speak to the target market and find the pain points that I could focus on. 1 in 3 women said that they did not feel a sufficient amount of support or resources they could rely on. The most important issue that these women unanimously agreed on was more focus on women's mental health issues. The top reported answers for how they would hear of this information was from a friend or social media. With this research, I was able to form an IMC plan that I felt would best help WSR reach out to my target market. You can find this plan under my "Projects" section.

#3 Creating A Motivating Environment

Problem

It was Thanksgiving week and I was working on packing and shipping orders for a popular clothing company. Our Black Friday sale opened and we had made proper preparations to ensure we would not fall behind and have to send out late orders. When the sale finally began, an unexpected crash happened in our system. We couldn't print orders for hours and we all sat around anxiously waiting for it to reboot. By the time it was up and running again, we were half a day behind and it was time to close up shop.

Solution

With it being a holiday week, cold, and the crash, I knew it was going to be a tough next day with people feeling unmotivated and tired. I also was aware that we were going to need full energy and everyone being at the top of their game to catch up with all the missed orders from the previous day. This being known, I decided that I was going to take the initiative to get to the warehouse before everyone arrived to set the tone for the day. I turned on music, set up everyones stations, brought snacks and danced everyone to their work stations as they walked in.

Results

The energy was reciprocated from my coworkers and stayed high throughout the day. We had caught up with missed orders within two and a half hours which would have been a 4 hour job. Because of the high motivation, by the end of the workday we had been put ourselves ahead of schedule, giving us an early leave the following day.

#4 Digital Marketing on TikTok

Problem

I was given the task to create a social media account on either TikTok or Instagram and build it from the ground up. Boosting engagement and building a following on TikTok can pose challenges, even though its algorithm is more accommodating to newer accounts compared to Instagram. Despite these challenges, I chose TikTok as my platform and decided to join the #HairTok community.

Solution

The reason for choosing TikTok's platform over Instagram was because of a book I had been studying called "Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins" by Mark Schaefer where he discusses the disloyal and untrusting consumers of today. They are sick of being lied to by companies, brands, influencers, and everyone else trying to get their attention. I know of the universal stigma of Instagram accounts being too curated, too staged, and pretty much fake. I felt that TikTok allowed for people to be unfiltered, real, and truly connect with their followers and community.

Results

I chose many topics from hairstyle tutorials, product reviews, and even poking fun at the many struggles of having curly hair. The content where I showed my not good hair days or my own personal hair issues gained the most views and likes. This engagement then brought more engagement to my other videos on my accounts, as well as increasing my following count.
